Third quarter 2026 effective tax rate was (0.9)% and resulted in tax expense of $9 on a pre-tax (loss). This rate was lower than the U.S. federal statutory tax rate of 21% but resulted in a tax expense, primarily due to the Goodwill impairment charge, as well as Xerox's inability to benefit from certain current year losses in jurisdictions with existing valuation allowances, and tax expense recorded on earnings in other jurisdictions.
Third quarter 2025 effective tax rate was (153.3)% and resulted in tax expense of $460 on a pre-tax (loss). This rate was higher than the U.S. federal statutory tax rate of 21.0%, primarily due to the establishment of a valuation allowance of $478 on certain tax assets, as well as not being able to benefit from certain current year losses and expenses and the geographical mix of earnings.
The effective tax rate for the nine months ended September 30, 2026 was (5.6)% and resulted in tax expense of $59 on a pre-tax (loss).
The effective tax rate for the nine months ended September 30, 2025 was (123.9)% and resulted in tax expense of $529 on a pre-tax (loss). This rate was higher than the U.S. federal statutory tax rate of 21.0% primarily due to the establishment of valuation allowances of $537 against certain deferred tax assets, as well as not benefiting from certain current year losses and expenses and the geographical mix of earnings.
The effective tax rate is based on nonrecurring events as well as recurring factors, including the taxation of foreign income. In addition, the effective tax rate will change based on discrete or other nonrecurring events that may not be predictable.
