Management's Discussion of Fund Performance

The following discussion compares the performance of the Fund to the ICE BofA 3-Month US Treasury Bill Index (the “Index”) to show how the Fund’s performance compares to the returns of similar investments for the reporting period. See the Average Annual Total Returns table below for the returns of the Fund and related indexes, including the Bloomberg US Aggregate Bond Index, a required broad-based index which represents the overall U.S. fixed-income market. The Fund seeks to provide current income consistent with capital preservation while maintaining liquidity by investing primarily in a diversified portfolio of investment-grade securities.

Top Contributors to Performance

  • Bullet

Sector and Security Selection both contributed positively to performance relative to the Index as both asset-backed securities and investment-grade corporate debt securities outperformed U.S. Treasuries during the last fiscal year.

Top Detractors from Performance

  • Bullet

Duration management and yield curve positioning contributed negatively to relative performance as the portfolio duration was positioned longer than the Index in a period of generally rising interest rates over the last fiscal year.

Performance Past Does Not Indicate Future [Text] Keep in mind that the Fund’s past performance is not a predictor of how the Fund will perform in the future.

Management's Discussion of Fund Performance

The following discussion compares the performance of the Fund to the Bloomberg BVAL Municipal Yield Curve (Callable) 3-Month Index (the “Index”) to show how the Fund’s performance compares to the returns of similar investments for the reporting period. See the Average Annual Total Returns table below for the returns of the Fund and related indexes including the S&P Municipal Bond Index, a required broad-based index which represents the overall U.S. municipal fixed-income market. The Fund seeks to provide current income consistent with preservation of capital with an emphasis on maintaining liquidity on a tax-exempt basis.

Top Contributors to Performance

  • Bullet

Credit allocation contributed positively to performance relative to the Index, with exposure to primarily A-2-rated variable rate securities as well as AA-rated and A-rated fixed-rate securities or equivalent issuer ratings, all of which are excluded from the AAA-rated Index.

  • Bullet

Selective yield curve allocations to high quality, longer than Index bond/note maturities of approximately six months to two years (though largely one year) during periods when short-term municipal market yields peaked, contributed to relative Fund performance. The 1-year AAA-rated Bloomberg Evaluation Service municipal yield fluctuated from 2.04% to 2.61%. Within this, specific sector contributions were from the General Obligation-Local and Industrial Development/Pollution Control Revenue sectors.

Top Detractors from Performance

  • Bullet

A significant allocation to daily and weekly Variable-Rate Demand Notes (“VRDNs”), important components for both liquidity and duration management, was a minor detractor from relative performance. The 7-day SIFMA Index rate, a proxy for weekly VRDNs which fluctuated over a wide range, averaged 2.44% during the period as the Federal Reserve lowered rates by 75 basis points.

  • Bullet

Duration management was a minor detractor from relative Fund performance. The Fund’s weighted average maturity (WAM) averaged approximately 100 days during the fiscal year, slightly longer than the duration of the Index, where yields ranged from 2.19% to 2.76% and ended the period higher by 26 basis points at 2.61%.
