When will I know more about my future role?

A thoughtful, careful, and intentional approach has been taken with every future role. Now that all future roles have been determined for Day 1, and as integration planning efforts continue, your future leader, current leader or both will be in touch to discuss what may or may not change in your day-to-day responsibilities on Day 1. Your leaders are also in the process of outlining transition plans for changes that may occur beyond Day 1 and will communicate those plans and timing with you at the appropriate time. Most employees will have little to no changes on Day 1, unless they are joining a new department or have a new role.

We are currently developing an Employee Experience Guide designed to help employees understand what to expect and where to find support on Day 1 and beyond. These resources won’t answer every question; however, our goal is to address what we can and provide as seamless a Day 1 experience as possible for everyone.

Why are titles different at Essential and American Water?

Essential and American Water currently use different job-title structures and naming conventions. Not all Essential employees will transition into American Water’s job architecture on Day 1, so while titles may not all align immediately, they will align as we integrate. For employees whose titles will align at a later date, your manager, in coordination with HR, will keep you informed about the timing. Any future title alignment will be thoughtfully evaluated and consistent with American Water job architecture framework.

Will my pay and bonuses stay the same in 2027?

Your base salary or wage rate will be no less than before the merger closes. In addition, your base salary or wage rate, target annual cash incentive opportunity, and target long-term performance opportunity will be no less favorable in the aggregate.

We are in the process of comparing American Water and Essential Utilities compensation plans, as well as benchmarking these plans to market practices. As we make decisions about what compensation will look like, we will provide more information at that time.

Will my health benefits stay the same in 2027?

Each company will keep their respective insurance partners through 2027.

We are in the process of comparing American Water and Essential Utilities benefits plans, as well as benchmarking these benefit plans to our peers in the utility industry. As we make decisions about what future benefits will look like, we will provide more information at that time.

Will my pay and benefits stay the same if I’m a union employee?

If you are subject to a collective bargaining agreement, the terms and conditions provided by the collective bargaining agreement will be honored.

What will happen to Employee Resource Groups?

Employee Resource Groups are an important part of both American Water and Essential Utilities. We anticipate that the Essential Utilities Resource Groups will merge with their counterpart resource group at American Water after closing. More information about employee resource groups will be shared after closing.

Can I apply for roles at American Water prior to close?

Yes. All open roles will continue to be posted on American Water’s careers page. If you’re interested in applying for a role, you’ll need to apply directly through the careers page.

Will there be future job opportunities once we merge?

The combination of American Water and Essential Utilities will create one of the largest regulated utilities in the country. A company of this size and geographic coverage will create significant career opportunities for its employees. We anticipate many new avenues for employees to expand their skill sets and apply for new positions within the company. After the transaction closes, employees will be able to explore career opportunities across the combined company.
