Available-for-sale investments are reported at fair value, with unrealized gains and losses and the related tax impact included as a separate component of stockholders’ equity and in comprehensive income. We do not intend to sell any of the securities in an unrealized loss position and it is not more likely than not that we would be required to sell these securities before recovery of their amortized cost basis, which may be at maturity.
Realized gains and losses on available-for-sale investments were not material in the periods presented.
Gains and losses on our marketable equity securities are recorded in other income—net on the condensed consolidated statements of income. During the first quarter of 2026, we sold certain marketable equity securities for net proceeds of $115.9 million, for which we recognized net gains of $50.7 million during the period. We had no sales of marketable equity securities during the second quarter of 2026 and the six months ended June 30, 2025. During the three and six months ended June 30, 2026, we recognized a $5.1 million and $1.5 million unrealized gain, respectively, related to the changes in the fair value of our marketable equity securities still held at the reporting date. During the three and six months ended June 30, 2025, we recognized an $11.3 million gain and $3.4 million unrealized loss, respectively. Assets Measured at Fair Value on a Recurring Basis
