| Valuation of investments | Valuation of investments - The Plan’s investments are stated at fair value pursuant to the provisions of Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) Accounting Standards Codification (ASC) No. 820, Fair Value Measurements and Disclosures. Fair value of a financial instrument is the price that would be received to sell an asset or paid to transfer a liability in an orderly transaction between market participants at the measurement date. See Note E for further information on fair value measurements.
| Participant Loans Receivable | Participant Loans Receivable - All transactions are measured at their unpaid principal balance plus any accrued but unpaid interest. Any individual credit risk related to participant loans is mitigated by the fact that these loans are secured by the participant’s vested balance. If a participant were to default, the participant’s account balance would be offset by the unpaid balance of the loan, and the participant would be subject to tax on the unpaid loan balance. As such, the participant is the only party affected in the event of a default.
| Revenue Recognition and Method of Accounting | Revenue Recognition and Method of Accounting - All transactions are recorded on an accrual basis. Purchases and sales of investments are recorded on a trade-date basis. Interest income is accrued when earned. Dividend income is recorded on the ex-dividend date. Capital gain distributions are included in dividend income. Net appreciation (depreciation) includes the gains and losses on investments bought and sold as well as held during the year. Expenses are recorded as incurred.
| Use of Estimates | Use of Estimates - The preparation of financial statements in conformity with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America requires management to make estimates and assumptions that affect certain reported amounts of assets, liabilities and changes therein and disclosure of contingent assets and liabilities. Actual results could differ from those estimates.
